Sanjib Majumder started learning Tabla and singing at the age of only seven. He followed the ‘Benaras Gharana (Style)’, a North Indian Style of playing Tabla that he inherited from his first mentor Ustad Tapan Modak. However, he later developed a keen sense of all six different playing ‘styles of Tabla’ (Gharana) and has an ability to teach and perform all styles. He has been playing Tabla professionally for over 30 years and is a classical and light music Tabla player and an A grade artist in Radio Bangladesh and Bangladesh Television (National Radio and Television of Bangladesh). He has performed both solos and accompanied many artists on various festivals and concerts throughout Bangladesh.
He used to practice 7/8 hours every day during his formal training course that lasted for five years, followed by informal training Guru-Shishya Parampara (Mentor-mentee Interactive Training) for another five years. Later, he learned tabla from Amitava Gayen (India), and finally, he took lessons from world famous Tabla Player Grammy winner Ustad Zakir Hussain (India), and Ustad Yogesh Samsi.
Sanjib is a dedicated Tabla tutor. He has trained numerous young students during his teaching career in different institutes. Besides, he has scholarly aptitude to convey the practical knowledge into theory, and he published a very useful learning book on Tabla with theoretical and practical details entitled ‘Knowledge of Tabla’. He is also capable of teaching vocal lessons. He took basic lessons from her elder sister Sheuli Majumder, and later from Sri Sandhya Roy (India), and now teaches in various institutes. He has also mastered keyboard and Harmonium, and has also been busy in teaching these instruments.
Besides performing and teaching music, he started to expand his musical skills through music direction. A handful of Albums have been directed by him. In these albums, he had shown excellent application of his musical talent. Later on, he has also been involved in orchestra direction.
